Dang it, I got Dracula from Scholastic (or was it RIF?) when I was twelve. It was one of the first grown-up books I ever read. Van Helsing is the first fictional character I was ever afraid for—I was sure Stoker was going to kill the badass old German dude! Book programs expand minds!
A sneaky feminist novel too, in some ways, though I wouldn’t learn the term “first-wave feminism” for several years. I just knew Mina was plucky and had her own typewriter.

That’s a great novel. I know, and some of our literacy programs might not be able to donate to schools either. These bans are awful.
