Vote for Haley in the SC Primary (Barf)
But watch Jacqueline Novak's new standup to get the taste out of your mouth
I think I’ve now fully accepted that we’re in a presidential election year. I don’t want to face it but here we are, and seeing Trump signs spring up again in the neighborhood and hearing rumor that folks in Iowa and New Hampshire consciously cast a ballot for this man, like on purpose?!, well, there’s a lot of Americans out there that have some truly awful mindsets and priorities. There’s just no excusing it anymore—voting for Trump is really letting that flag fly.
But we Democrats in South Carolina can do one small thing, which is to forgo the Democratic primary on February 3rd and save that vote for the Republican primary on February 24th. South Carolina is an open primary state, so you can vote in one primary (regardless of party affiliation), but you cannot vote in both. So suck it up, and mark your calendar to vote for Haley on the 24th. Good for her, I guess, for sticking it out. Steel yourself that you might start getting Republican political fliers in the mail afterwards.
You might even get one from everyone’s favorite patriarch, Stan Tzouvelekas, who you might recall I wrote about last month. He recently announced plans to run for the South Carolina House seat that might be vacated if Jason Elliot wins the Senate seat, and he’s so certain he’ll win that he’s already promised he’ll immediately join the most bro-tastic of fascist clubs, our South Carolina Freedom Caucus.
Y’all. We do not need another of these fanatics in the House or propping up the Freedom Caucus. That we even have a Freedom Caucus is about the dumbest thing ever, as if the Republican supermajority in the legislature wasn’t already doing all the devil’s work. Oh no, they want to go full “we don’t have a democracy we have a republic” and “we need to subject women who have abortions to the death penalty.” Even McMaster very gently tsk-tsked them at the end of his State of the State address this week. Spread the word that Tzouvelekas wants to do things like shut down the Greenville Women’s Clinic, one of only three abortion providers in the state (if you can get one before six weeks). Maybe some folks will lose elections on abortion rights even here in South Carolina (hey, Kentucky did it!).
Ok, well there you have it: hold your nose and vote for Haley if you’re here in South Carolina. In the meantime, if you need a break from politics, you absolutely must watch Jacqueline Novak’s new standup special on Netflix, (thanks to my friend Jamie for sending). Her words had some kind of magical power that reached back in time and erased all the shame from my teenage years. You’ve never seen anything like it (make some men watch it with you). Happy weekend!
Ok, ok, fine. I’ll do it. (Barf)
A good piece out this morning by Savannah Moss (Greenville News reporter) on the debates about whether to vote for Haley or not: https://www.greenvilleonline.com/story/news/politics/elections/2024/02/01/will-democrats-cross-party-lines-for-south-carolina-primaries-some-are-debating-trump-biden/72323349007/?utm_source=pgre-DailyBriefing&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=daily-briefing&utm_term=hero&utm_content=1120GN-E-NLETTER65
