One Texas Judge to Ruin It All

I continue to remain stunned that so many mediocre white men fuck up America for the rest of us. Instead of listening to experts and doing the best possible thing, they fling their power around hoping that their authority itself will become a stand-in for actual, effective governing that makes all of our lives better.
Instead we have men like Matthew Kasmaryk, who is somehow a federal judge, telling the FDA and all of America yesterday that we can’t have access to the abortion drug mifepristone. Because he is an asshole, he also issued the ruling on a Friday night during a high holy week, just to make sure the decision is extra painful.

A federal judge in Washington state immediately issued an opposite ruling, ordering that the drug remain available, ensuring the cases will more quickly be heard by the Supreme Court, where we have at least one corrupt judge (Clarence Thomas) so deeply in the pockets of conservative donors that there is no way he’s going to give up another superyacht vacation to ensure quality healthcare is available to 51 percent of the population.
In even more depressing news, North Carolina might be able to override the Democratic governor’s veto power after a Democrat switched parties last week. Florida’s six-week abortion ban looks imminent, which will put even more pressure on the three abortion providers in South Carolina, especially if medication abortion becomes less available. If there was ever a time to donate to a local abortion fund, now is it. The Palmetto State Abortion Fund is the only one that works directly with the Greenville Women’s Clinic.
This is also another reminder that while you can order the two-drug medication abortion regimen from overseas sites like Aid Access, it is illegal in South Carolina to self-manage an abortion or to supply these drugs to someone else for their abortion. You can still have these drugs prescribed to you by a doctor in South Carolina, and in that case it is legal to take them up to 22 weeks (although they are usually prescribed in the first trimester). It’s important that South Carolinians are aware of this, because we know that law enforcement in the state has already indicated they will arrest women. In other states, police have also used electronic records to prosecute women, so please remember digital records can also be used as evidence. In better news, we adopted a seven-month old rescue schnauzer from the Greenville Humane Society. We’re not sure yet if he’s an Archie, Baxter, or Beaster (Alex suggested we combine “beast” and “Easter”). If you have any suggestions, let us know. Look at his cute little face, and hope you all enjoy the holiday weekend. Even with bad news, hope springs eternal.

The pup is precious, proving again that dogs are inherently superior to white men.
